A Note to the Graduates

One of my favorite books often given to graduates is Oh, the Places You’ll Go, by Dr. Suess. Here is an excerpt from the beginning of the book:

“You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself

any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

This book reminds us that life is full. It’s full of choices, challenges, ups and downs, fun times, and frightening times. And it is all of these experiences that make life what it is and make us who we are. Embrace all that life has to offer you. For we could not know what was good in life if did not experience that which is bad. We cannot fully experience happiness if we suppress sadness. Life is full when we allow ourselves to experience the breadth and depth of it.

Congratulations to all of the graduates this year. Be proud of your accomplishments. Be thankful to those who helped you along the way. Continue in your diligence to succeed because oh, the places you will go!
